Asia and Africa Visiting Fellows program

IDSA invites applications for Visiting Fellowships from researchers based in South Asia (excluding India) and other developing countries in Asia and Africa to interact with India’s research community and to pursue their research in regional and international security.

Applicant requirements

  1. Scholars and researchers working with reputed international universities, think tanks and policy research institutes with a minimum experience of three years; government officials and persons of eminence are also welcome to apply.
  2. Doctoral candidates from international universities.

Academic requirements may be waived in the case of experienced candidates with relevant policy experience and substantial published work in reputed journals or publishing houses.

Programme Details

  • Fellows must be affiliated to IDSA full-time during the course of the Fellowship.
  • Fellows are expected to write an original research paper (4000-6000 words) and present the paper as part of the IDSA’s Fellows’ Seminar.
  • Fellows are also required to write commentaries for publication on the IDSA website.
  • Fellows are expected to participate in IDSA discussions, seminars, presentations and any other relevant events.
  • Note:

  • The duration of the Asia and Africa Visiting Fellowships would be for a period of up to 9 months. Shorter tenures may also be considered on a case by case basis..

Facilities to be Provided

IDSA will provide free, shared residential accommodation, subject to availability, office space, internet connectivity and other support facilities. A Fellowship amount of Rs. 50,000/- per month will be provided to the Fellows under Asia and Africa Visiting Fellowship Programme.

How to apply

  • Applications should be accompanied by a 800-word proposal indicating the academic/policy relevance of the research proposed, justification for conducting research at IDSA, benefit to the host (IDSA) and parent institutions, time frame and end product.
  • A 500-word Statement of Purpose and Intent explaining how this Fellowship will benefit the scholar. The Statement of Purpose should clearly state the intended duration and starting date of Fellowship.
  • An updated Resume.
  • Two published papers as writing samples.
  • Two Letters of Reference (professional/academic).
  • Selected candidates would require a research visa for the duration of the Visiting Fellowship. IDSA will provide a letter of affiliation to enable this process. To avoid any inconvenience, selected candidates are requested to get in touch with the Indian Embassies/Consulates in their host countries to get more information about the process and time line.
